Redmonk screencasts show off ConVirt

RedmonkTV recently put up a fantastic two part screencast series where Redmonk’s Micheal Cote talks with Arsalan Farooq and Jaydeep Marfatia (our CEO and EVP of Engineering respectively) about ConVirt. This is followed by a great walkthrough of some key features of ConVirt by Jaydeep, with Micheal asking his usual incisive and insightful questions.

In Micheal’s own words:

Virtualization is magic of IT shops, but as with any technology it creates it’s own unique set of management challenges. That’s why it was fun to sit down with Convirture’s Jaydeep Marfatia and Arsalan Farooq for this two part screencast and see how ConVirt tackles virtualization management issues.

The first part of the screencast is here: Part 1
The second part is here: Part 2

Folks, this one is not to be missed! Enjoy.

ConVirt 1.1 is now available.

We are extremely pleased to announce availability of ConVirt v1.1. Some of the highlights of this release are:

Virtual Network Management
Support for creating isolated and NAT-based networks on managed hosts. Each virtual network can have a pre-defined IP range, with automatic DHCP provisioning of IP’s for all attached VM’s.

Automation using CLI (Preview Edition)
This release of ConVirt includes a preview version of the upcoming ConVirt Command Line Interface. With the ConVirt CLI, most common operations available via the ConVirt GUI may also be executed over the command line. This would enable users to easily script management operations across their ConVirt managed environment as well as integrate these operations with any pre-existing management scripts and processes.

Ability to add disks to running VM
This release adds ability to add disks to running Xen Virtual machines.

Additional Certified Configurations
RHEL 5.3, CentOS 5.3 and Ubuntu 9.04 are added to the list of supported distributions. For a complete list of supported configurations, please visit the supported configurations page.

Bug fixes
This release includes a number of fixes.

LWN.net reviews ConVirt 1.0

Koen Vervloesem has done a great writeup on ConVirt 1.0 over at LWN.net. Koen seems to have come away with a very positive first impression.

From the article:

ConVirt is an interesting solution for system administrators with a lot of servers and virtual machines to manage. One central dashboard to install, monitor and manage virtual machines should be more than welcome. On the server side there is virtually no extra work: a user only needs to run the setup tool once to configure the server correctly.
