eWeek takes ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise for a spin

Jason Brooks at eWeek recently took ConVirt Enterprise for a spin in their labs. In a series of two articles, Jason reports on his experience, ultimately concluding:

“Convirt Enterprise worked as advertised in my tests, and is well worth evaluating sites in search of management solutions for Linux-based virtualization hosts.”

Don’t miss out on the original articles.

  • ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise Brings VMWare-Style Management to Linux Virtualization Hosts.
  • Virtualization Technology: Convirture 2.0 Unlocks Virtualization Potential of Linux Operating Systems.

Jason does a fantastic job of putting ConVirt through the wringer. We are thrilled that Jason came away impressed!

Convirture Collaborates with Eucalyptus Systems to Deliver Enterprise-Grade Management for Private Clouds

ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise brings powerful management capabilities to Eucalyptus-based cloud environments

SAN FRANCISCO, February 3, 2011 – Convirture, maker of Linux and open source-based virtualization management software, has partnered with Eucalyptus Systems, creators of the leading independent private cloud platform, to deliver enterprise-grade private cloud management capabilities to Eucalyptus users and customers. The agreement calls for the two companies to work together to integrate ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise with Eucalyptus open source software and Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition (EE) , as well as cooperate on sales, marketing and support activities.

As open source-based private clouds become more widely deployed in enterprise data centers, the need increases for a sophisticated management toolset. ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise provides Eucalyptus private cloud users with management capabilities that were previously only available on closed-source products.

ConVirt software manages virtual and private-cloud environments based on open platforms such as Linux, Xen and KVM. ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise provides advanced automation and scalability features for use in large and/or mission-critical environments, including high availability, backup and recovery, storage and network automation, and enterprise-grade security. It also includes tools and features for managing hosted and private clouds.

“Convirture’s software provides sophisticated management capabilities that will help further drive adoption of open source-based private clouds in the enterprise,” said Matt Reid, vice president of sales and marketing at Eucalyptus Systems. “With the open source Convirture software and Eucalyptus, a wide range of users will be able to deploy and manage powerful on-premise clouds, and we are pleased to include Convirture in the growing Eucalyptus partner ecosystem.”

Eucalyptus is infrastructure software that enables organizations to deploy scalable private and hybrid cloud computing environments within a secure IT infrastructure. With Eucalyptus, users can make more efficient use of their computing resources, increase productivity, and deploy new applications faster, while protecting sensitive data and reducing capital expenditures. Eucalyptus supports the same application programming interfaces (APIs) as public clouds, and today Eucalyptus is fully compatible with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure.

“This partnership is great for existing Eucalyptus users and customers, as well as those looking to expand their private cloud presence,” said Craig Bauman, vice president, sales and business development for Convirture. “By adding a management layer that rivals anything available on the market, private cloud operators can realize the goal of a flexible, easily provisioned cloud-based data center.”

Convirture Brings Strong Momentum into 2011

2010′s new products and customer acceptance provide platform for growth

SAN FRANCISCO, January 19, 2011 – Convirture, maker of virtualization management software, reported its most successful year ever with new products and partner initiatives, as well as significant user adoption and customer acceptance of both its free ConVirt Open Source and the commercial ConVirt Enterprise software versions.

ConVirt software provides sophisticated, enterprise-grade software for managing virtualization and private-cloud environments based on open platforms such as Linux, Xen and KVM.

“The launch of ConVirt 2.0 Open Source in February really hit a chord with anyone looking for a better way to manage Linux virtualization,” said Arsalan Farooq, CEO of Convirture. “The new features, combined with our datacenter experience from versions 1.x drove an incredible amount of downloads and valuable contributions to the product, which provided a great launch pad for our Enterprise version later in the year.”

In July 2010, Convirture released ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise, which added additional features to the open source version, including advanced automation features as well as private cloud management capabilities.

Farooq continued: “ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise really established that a management toolset for both Linux virtualization and private clouds based on Xen and KVM could be every bit as sophisticated as the toolsets that are available for proprietary, closed platforms like VMware vCenter. The feedback from customers has been extremely positive.”

Other 2010 highlights include

  • ConVirt Open Source:
    • Surpassed 45,000 downloads of ConVirt Open Source with 15,000+ downloads of version 2.0 since launch in February
    • 2,000+ unique deployments
  • ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise:
    • Updated to include advanced automation features including high availability, backup and restore, dynamic workload management VLAN integration, as well as enhanced security capabilities such as LDAP support
    • Launch of ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise “Starter Edition” to get people up and running quickly and cost-effectively
    • More than 70 deployments of ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise
    • Selection by CTOEdge.com as one of the “The 10 Most Important Enterprise IT Products of 2010″
  • The establishment of the Convirture partner program
  • A partnership with Canonical to deliver virtual machine and private cloud management on Ubuntu systems
  • Signed agreements with large solution provider partners and managed service providers
  • Signed distribution agreements with Linux kernel distributors

2011 Outlook

Over the next few months, Convirture plans to announce additional strategic and technology partnerships, along with new products and distribution alliances. “By building out our ecosystem and continuing to add features and capabilities to our core products, we will ensure that any IT manager seeking to grow their virtual and cloud environments on Xen and KVM will have the absolute best management capabilities and support in the industry. And that includes closed-source offerings,” said Farooq.

ConVirt 2.0 named one of “10 Most Important Enterprise IT Products of 2010″

CTO Edge just published their “Ten Most Important Enterprise IT Products of 2010,” and ConVirt 2.0 is on the list!

Calling Convirture an “[important] upstart,” CTO Edge notes that ConVirt 2.0 “highlights how heterogeneous virtualization management will evolve.”

We couldn’t agree more!

This is great validation for our vision, and all our efforts so far. Of course, ConVirt 2.0 wouldn’t exist as it does today without the involvement from our community and feedback from our customers … so a big thanks goes out to you!

This is a great conclusion to 2010. For 2011, we have even more exciting plans in store. Stay tuned.
